American Imperialism & Hawaii

Friday October 28, 2011

Good morning Sophomores.

How did a string of islands 2,000 miles away come under U.S. control?

Today we will be studying about the imperialism of the United States during the late 1800’s. Specifically, you will read about how Hawaii was annexed and eventually incorporated into the United States. You will also learn how America began to increase its dealings with other nations of the world and the development of America as a world power.

Remember, throughout the early and mid 1800’s, the United States largely “kept to itself” in the world. Not only was our nation focused on western expansion of the North American continent, but also we spend much of the 1800’s dealing with our domestic issues. This came to a head during the Civil War. After the Civil War, with the issue of slavery and secession behind us, America could move forward and take her place as a world power.

Here is your Guided Reading for Chapter 17/Section1:
